Every fall I make this recipe. My mother, Joan Smith, made this apple dish every fall. We would load up the car with a picnic and travel to Pennsylvania to pick grapes. We would pick those purple grapes with the juicy insides to make homemade grape juice.
After we picked the grapes we would stop at a roadside park and eat the picnic lunch. She made this recipe and it immediately made me fall in love with fall and apples.
The recipe is as follows:
Mix:
1 cup sugar, 3/4 cup flour, 2 tsp baking powder and 1 tablespoon soft shortening.
Add: 1/2 cup evaporated milk and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Stir until mixed.
Add: 4 cups peeled and sliced apples (any good baking apple will do)
Stir until apples are coated with the mixture.
Put into an 8x8 baking pan.
Topping:
2 teaspoons brown sugar, 4 teaspoons soft butter or margarine and 1/3 cup flour. Sprinkle over the apple mixture.
Bake at 400 for 30 to 45 minutes - don't let the topping burn - it should be nicely browned.
When we returned home mom would put the grapes in a juicer and make grape juice. She would can many, many quarts of grape juice for our shelves. It was delicious.

Nightmare with a good ending
Things have been winding down and I am getting back to my normal routine. That means cooking, cleaning, work and church. I actually went to a social activity today. Sandra at our church in marrying Jim. I am so happy for her. She is a hard-working, cute, spiritual and all round nice person. I was able to attend her wedding shower today.
So many of my friends and members of our young single adult branch asked how Jerry is doing. I had to reply that I thought he was doing so much better and that life was getting back to normal. We still have a new doctor to interview and we have to make an appointment with a urologist. Jerry went to Wal-Mart today. We take things for granted in life. Don't we? An outing to a big box store all by himself is a major feat for him. He didn't collapse from being tired when he got home. We feel blessed that he has come this far in the healing process.
I have spoken to a few of my friends and some colleagues at work about how our doctor treated us while Jerry was in the hospital. He needs to study medical ethics and implement them into his practice. I am so disappointed in his behavior. I am actually physically sick when I think about that stunt he pulled. I had a dream the other night that he trapped Jerry and I into a hospital bed and wouldn't let us out of it. Bizarre, I know but now that I have had time to look back at the situation that is exactly how I felt.
I believe that he is a talented doctor and surgeon. But he was unethical in his treatment of a purely ethical action on my part. I called in the nursing supervisor when I thought that Jerry's medication was not administered properly by the nursing staff. The nurse was making a mistake between administering a medicine three times a day and every three hours. It was pain medicine so it did not endanger Jerry's life but he was in pain. There was another medication that was supposed to be reduced from 1 mg to .5 mg. The 1 mg was too much and was making Jerry incapable of making decisions about his care. We had asked the doctor to reduce the medication and that had happened during the night. But in the computer the 1 mg was still being prescribed.
The doctor came in the evening after the supervisor was called. He told us that Jerry may have to have surgery the next day. He would have an ultrasound and if he had an abscess the doctor would have to go in to drain it. He told us that the hospital would not want to do the surgery on a Sunday and he may have to postpone it until Monday. I told him that if he needed me to that I would call the hospital and advocate for the surgery on Sunday.
The doctor then said that I didn't have the power. I told him that I was powerful and that if Jerry needed the surgery that I would surely call the hospital and have a conversation with them. I didn't want Jerry to be in pain anymore. He told me that he was the one that would make the decision to go to surgery. I told him that I knew that he was the doctor and that he would make the decision. I told him that I would help if he needed me to talk to the hospital.
He then proceeded to tell me of all the problems I caused him today because of my call to the nursing supervisor. He said that the nurse could lose her job and that she would have to go in front of the hospital board. He would also have to write a report and go in front of a board also. He had received 5 calls today about the incident with the nurse. I was to call him if there was a problem with the nurses. He would handle his "staff". How would I like it if I made a mistake and someone called my supervisor?
I asked him why we were given a hospital guest relations telephone number to call if we had any problems? He said that it was "PR" and that he didn't want any of those people involved with his patients. I told him that I believed that I was just handling a miscommunication between the night nursing staff and the daytime nursing staff. The doctor said that I had to handle the problem the "Legal" way and that would get everyone in trouble.
He told us that the hospital would start making decisions about Jerry's care and that he would have any say in the matter. They would bring in the hospitalist and infectious disease and they would manage his care instead of him. But now he would have to work with other doctors that that they would take over and that he would get too many calls during the day about Jerry's care.
Then he started to tell me that he should "Just pack him up and send him to the clinic. Be rid of him." I started to get really mad at this point but I kept my cool. The doctor asked if we wanted another doctor. Jerry told the doctor that he didn't want that to happen. That he wanted him to continue on as his doctor.
He started up again and told us that we had to call him if there was a problem. I told him that I would call him from now on.
The doctor finally ended the nasty conversation.
I told Jerry that I didn't want him to have this doctor anymore. But he insisted that we keep him. So we decided that the doctor was being a jerk about this situation and left it at that.
The doctor treated us with respect after his verbal abuse. I think he knew that he did something wrong.
Now, we have decided not to see this doctor again. We will be heading to the Cleveland Clinic for his follow-up care. The Glickman Urology Department is rated #2 in the world. We were with them at the start of Jerry's care but this doctor switched to University Hospital and he followed him.
I don't ever want to have this happen again. It makes you feel as if you don't have any choice but to be subject to unethical treatment by a doctor. We felt powerless and scared. After the doctor treated us this way we had to be careful about how we approached him. We were scared to even asked him to bring in an infectious disease doctor. He finally admitted that he would have to bring someone in for a consult. That doctor was the answer. As soon as he changed the antibiotics Jerry started to get better and he went home in 5 days.
All of the staff at the hospital were great! Even the little nurse who made that medication mistake. She stepped up afterwards and gave Jerry wonderful care. The hosptial was new and had great private rooms that were comfortable and pleasant: Wooden floors, tiled bathrooms and healthy food, big screen TV's and and a comfy recliner and couch.
We also had the blessing of having our family, the branch and our friends fast and pray for Jerry. We know that God was with us in the healing process. Jerry began rapidly recovering after the fast happened. We thank all who prayed and fasted for him. God was listening and he blessed him. The hospital chaplain - Melanie - was wonderful. She knew our religion and gave us help when we needed it.
I know that angels were surrounding me as I was attending to Jerry's care. It was a 40 minute drive home from the hospital. When I was driving home late at night I believe that angels were helping me to drive the car and keep me awake.
Our girls were a great support to us. They called everyday to see how Jerry was improving. God Bless them, I needed them so much.
The people that I work with were a wonderful support to me. They stopped by daily to keep up my spirits and help me through the tough times.

Jerry
Wow! Whirlwinded. That is how I can describe that last few weeks. Jerry was supposed to go in to have a urological procedure - He had prostate cancer and had IMRT 4 years ago. He developed some scar tissue that caused a blockage. His dr. tired a in office procedure. It didn't work and he was to have an outpatient procedure on September 13. The procedure went well but he had an infection and he was admitted. It was supposed to be for a few days of IV antibiotics. He had a complication and didn't return home until last Friday.
At times we didn't know what to do. We had blessings from the priesthood and finally a consult with an infectious disease doctor. The high power and expensive antibiotics started to work and he was able to be released. He lost 20 pounds in the hospital. He needed to lose weight but that is a really hard way to do it.
The missionaries from Cleveland were summoned and they gave us terrific priesthood blessings. I knew that the Lord was blessing us during his hospitalization but was spiritually uplifting to have the priesthood working in our behalf. Angels were attending us - we knew it - and it was confirmed by the blessings we received. I was never afraid of the worst happening. Jerry has too much to do before he is to be taken to heaven.
He was at a new hospital in Beachwood, Ohio. The hospital administration came into his room on the day of his release and asked him questions about how the hospital could improve because he was one of the few that had spent 17 days at the facility.
He is happy to be home and I am happy to have him here. I was really lonely without him. I moved a bed down into the family room for him and I have slept on the couch so that I would be near him. Last night he made me sleep upstairs. I fought him on it but he insisted. I made him promise to call me using his cell phone if he needed anything.
He is on his way to recovery and we feel blessed. He still needs to see the doctors for follow-up care but the infection is under control.
Thank you to all of our family and friends for their support. We love you all.

I recently received an email from a fellow user of Ancestry.com. She is doing family research on her husband's side of the family. She was asking me about Ellen Page. I had uncovered some information on Ellen at the beginning of this year and put it on ancestry.com. I communicated with Joan through email. She was asking about the year of Ellen's death. I had found information on another Ellen Page that I knew was not correct but wanted to store it in my history until I had time to do some more research on her. My Great Aunt Lydia is 4th from the left. Her husband, Charles Johnston is next to her.
I asked Joan for picture of Lydia (Crandall) Johnston's family. She sent me the picture today.
Back Row (left to right)

Polar Express 2010
The Polar Express - Cuyahoga Valley Railroad
We went to the North Pole tonight. We rode a magical train that left from Akron, Ohio. It took us through the woods and along a snowy path. Here are some highlights of the trip. I hope you like it.

The Peyton's, Stoutenburg's and Hanoseks went on the trip. The elves were very entertaining. We had hot chocolate and ate chocolate chip cookies. We had the best trainman ever!
A fun night was had by all!

Ohio in the Fall
I can't believe that people who live in the west think that where they live is beautiful. The mountians are grey and brown for most of the year. There is a little color in the fall and a little green in the spring. I like to look at the mountains but I wouldn't want to look at them all year long.
I know that people from the West miss their mountains and can't seem to drive in the East without having them as their compass. Having lived in Ohio all but three years of my life I can get along nicely without them.
I have been sick since Saturday morning and I feel mostly better today. I even went out shopping today for awhile. I didn't find anything I wanted to buy. I think that is great. That a person can go out with intentions of buying something and come home with nothing.

I
took some pictures of Maggie yesterday. I was 80 degrees and I wanted to get outside to enjoy the weather even though I didn't feel that great. I had a treat in my hand so that she would raise up her ears. I think she looks so cute when she does that. She is a great dog and I wish that I had more time that I could spend with her.
I also took a picture of Lilly. Her one eye has a cataract so it turned darker than the other eye. I have to brush her now because her fur gets matted if I don't. She is old but she is still likes to sit on your lap.
I also took a picture of my Mustang. It still looks good with a few minor scratches in the finish. I am thinking of selling it next spring. I might miss it just a little. I liked to brag about it. It is a fast car.

Baby Carrie
This is my little baby Carrie at 4 months old. She was so cute and cuddly. Always happy and liked to wiggle her feet. Now that she is the mother of little baby Molly I wanted to publish this photo of her. I don't know if Molly (at 14 weeks) looks like Carrie or Brian. She is so cute and now I can see both of them in her.
